McGrain Named State GOP Executive Director

Governor Dave Heineman says McGrain "has what it takes" to make Party successful

LINCOLN, NE - Chairman Mark Fahleson announced today that political consultant and fundraiser Jordan McGrain has been named Executive Director of the Nebraska Republican Party. McGrain replaces Perre Neilan, who resigned in January to accept a position in the private sector.

"I am excited to have Jordan as a part of the team," Fahleson said. "I believe his energy and experience will be an asset to our candidates across the state."

McGrain had served as an independent strategist and fundraising consultant to state and municipal candidates since 2006, working with successful legislative candidates Tim Gay, John Nelson, Charlie Janssen, Beau McCoy, Scott Price and Ken Schilz, and North Platte Mayor Marc Kaschke.

Prior to serving as a political strategist, McGrain worked as a development consultant for an Omaha company specializing in non-profit capital campaigns.

"Jordan McGrain is a proven strategist and fundraiser who has what it takes to make the Party sound, strong, and successful in 2010 and beyond," said Governor Dave Heineman.

In 2007, McGrain served as campaign manager for Attorney General Jon Bruning's U.S. Senate run. He has also run campaigns for former State Senator Mick Mines and former Omaha City Councilman and mayoral candidate Jim Vokal.

"2010 is an important year for the Republican Party," said Hal Daub, former Omaha Mayor and former Republican National Committeeman."  Jordan McGrain adds the leadership and competitive spirit we need to be successful."

Chairman's Report

I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season and had an opportunity to spend time with friends and loved ones and reflect on those things that are truly important.

It's now officially 2010--a critical year for the Republican Party and our nation.  Wouldn't it be great if we could kick off the 2010 election cycle by electing a Republican to Ted Kennedy's Senate seat?  According to the recent polls, it's within reach, Republican Massachusetts State Sen. Scott Brown is currently in a dead heat with his Democratic rival.  On the heels of major wins in Virginia and New Jersey last year, a special election victory in this race on January 19th would not only send shock waves across the Democratic Party, but it would also end their 60-vote, filibuster-proof majority in the United States Senate ahead of the final votes on the health care bill.  Simply put, Scott Brown could help undo what Washington Ben Nelson did to Nebraska and America.

We have asked our Republican friends in Massachusetts what we in Nebraska can do to help and they've told us we would be most effective by helping to make calls from our own phones right here in Nebraska.  It's a great way to give our volunteers a test run as we ramp up efforts on behalf of Governor Heineman, Attorney General Bruning, Secretary of State Gale, Auditor Foley, Congressman Terry and our other Republican candidates in Nebraska.  Visit Scott Brown's website to learn more about his candidacy, and then click here to join the phone-from-home program.  If you're interested in heading out to Massachusetts in person, contact our office at (402) 475-2122 and ask for anyone in the political department.  We'll get you connected with the Brown campaign to discuss lodging and logistics.

Give Ben the Boot

The sleazy deal Washington Ben Nelson cut on health care has embarrassed our great state--the phrase "Cornhusker Kickback" has now become part of popular culture thanks to him.

Enough is enough.  On the day before Washington Ben announced his vote we went up with a new website
www.GiveBentheBoot.comThe new website has gained national attention- not only are Nebraskans fed up with Nelson, but the rest of the nation is too.

To date, GiveBentheBoot.com has received over 40,000 hits and over 1,200 individual contributions.  Our Facebook page for Give Ben the Boot has over 2,000 friends (join us if you haven't already).  Money raised from this website will be used to help us unseat Washington Ben in 2012.

I encourage you to check out this website, forward the link to all of your friends, and help us Give Ben the Boot.

The effort will prop-up candidates who are committed to creating programs that entice businesses to locate and expand in Nebraska and who are committed to encouraging in-state entrepreneurship.  For 2010, there are three levels: $500 General Membership, $1,000 Advisory Board Member, $2,500 Executive Board Member.  Membership in the Free E Caucus includes invitations to roundtables, receptions and other events with our Republican Electeds and Party Leadership.  The Free E Caucus will provide an avenue for members to connect and communicate with our Republican Leaders as they work with legislation directly affecting small business.

Fact-Checking Ben Nelson

"The points he makes show he either needs to force Congress to change the legislation or rethink his support for final passage."

National Review Online: Critical Condition

Grace-Marie Turner
January 4, 2010

Sen. Ben Nelson is defending his vote to pass the Senate's health-care legislation in a new television ad in his home state of Nebraska, but the points he makes show he either needs to force Congress to change the legislation to match his claims or rethink his support for final passage.

In an attempt to quell a firestorm of opposition to his casting the crucial 60th vote for the Senate bill, Nelson says, "With all the distortions about health-care reform, I want you to hear directly from me."

He argues that the bill "lowers costs for families and small business, protects Medicare, finally guarantees coverage for preexisting conditions, and reduces the deficit. And it's not run by the government." Nelson adds, "I'm convinced this is right for Nebraska."

Who wouldn't vote for such a bill? If only Nelson's comments were accurate.

Nelson wisely doesn't mention the controversial "Cornhusker Kickback" that granted federal funding for his state's Medicaid expansion, or the abortion language that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops says does not guard against federal funding of abortion. But there are serious problems with the claims the senator does make.

Independent analysts show that health costs would continue to rise, access to care could be jeopardized for seniors, deficit reduction is an illusion created by budget gimmicks, and the preexisting-condition clause would come at the price of big-government control.

Let's take Nelson's first claim - that the bill "lowers costs for families and small business."

The independent, nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says insurance costs for families and small businesses would continue their rapid rise.

Families purchasing insurance in the individual health-insurance market would be hardest hit, with premiums $2,100 higher than if Congress did nothing. A family would pay $15,200 for health insurance by 2016 if the Senate bill were enacted, compared with only $13,100 if the bill were not enacted, the CBO says.

Premiums for a family receiving coverage though a small business would increase to $19,200, on average, by 2016 - about the same as without reform.

In addition, most companies would face an avalanche of new reporting requirements and potential penalties and fines. Health reform will add to, not lighten, the regulatory and financial burden on companies that had hoped to get relief from rising health costs.

The National Federation of Independent Business came out strongly against the Senate bill, saying it "is short on savings and long on costs, is the wrong reform, at the wrong time and will increase health-care costs and the cost of doing business."

Bill proponents argue that some people and businesses would see lower premiums because they would qualify for subsidies. But this is just another Washington budgetary game. Subsidies aren't free. Taxpayers always pay. And only about 20 million Americans would qualify for the premium subsidies, even though everyone would be required to carry government-approved health insurance.

Senator Nelson says that the bill "protects Medicare." Even though they are being told otherwise, seniors would pay a high price for reform. The Senate bill would reduce Medicare spending by $471 billion over the coming decade. Rather than reinvesting that money to improve and modernize the program, the money instead would be diverted to create a new entitlement program to subsidize health insurance for working Americans.

Cuts this deep would cause many providers to stop seeing Medicare patients, or perhaps even to close their doors. Medicare's chief actuary, Richard Foster, says that doctors, hospitals, and other providers "could find it difficult to remain profitable and, absent legislative intervention, might end their participation in the Medicare program (possibly jeopardizing access to care for beneficiaries)."

And the claim that bill lowers the deficit means that, in addition to cutting Medicare by half a trillion dollars, the Senate would also raise half a trillion in new taxes - during a recession.

Only a series of accounting gimmicks - such as implementing benefits beginning in 2014 but raising taxes starting in 2010, and double-counting Medicare savings - allowed Senate majority leader Harry Reid to get a CBO cost estimate that pretends to add "not one dime" to the deficit.

Medicare actuary Foster found that the Senate bill would bend the cost curve up, not down, and that the new taxes on drugs, devices, and health-insurance plans would increase prices and health-insurance costs for consumers.

Guaranteeing coverage for preexisting conditions unfortunately would mean federalizing health-insurance regulations, which challenges Senator Nelson's claim that health care would not be "run by government."

Senator Reid's bill contains more than 2,500 references to powers and responsibilities of the secretary of health and human services. It would centralize Washington's control over health spending and coverage. The federal government would regulate the health-insurance market (until now a purview of the states) and would require virtually all Americans to have the health insurance it specifies. Washington would also dictate how much of their income people had to pay for health insurance, and it would set up a system of federal fines and penalties for those who didn't comply.

Given all this, Senator Nelson may want to rethink his support for the legislation.

Nelson Gets Defensive in TV AD During NU Game

Fahleson:  Nebraskans would rather be watching Ndamukong Suh than Washington Ben

Senator Nelson will release a new television ad tonight during the Holiday Bowl.  Throughout the ad Nelson tries to appeal to Nebraskans by making empty statements such as: "With all the distortions about health care reform, I want you to hear directly from me."

"The ad's not believable.  Nebraskans know actions speak louder than words.  Nebraska Ben says one thing, then Washington Ben Nelson cuts sleazy backroom deals with Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi," Nebraska Republican Party Chairman Mark Fahleson remarked.

Nelson goes on in the ad to say he has "listened" to Nebraskans and is "convinced this is right for Nebraska."  Fahleson continued, "Really, Sen. Nelson?  Did you really listen to the thousands of calls, e-mails, visitors and  protesters from Nebraska saying they don't want this bill?  The same people you referred to as "almost laughable"?  That arrogance is what's laughable."

The timing of the ad is also questionable.  Senator Nelson has been under constant pressure from Nebraskans for his health care vote.  Nelson voted against the wishes of his constituents and is now trying to reach as many of them as possible by airing this during the Holiday Bowl.

"It's fitting he chose to run the ad during the Nebraska football game since Nebraskans have made it clear they want to sack Ben Nelson." Fahleson stated.

This ad was paid for by the Nebraska Democratic Party.  Given the current financial state of the Nebraska Democratic Party, it's obvious national money is funding this campaign to give Nelson cover.

Fahleson concluded, "Nebraskans would rather be watching Ndamukong Suh than Washington Ben."

New Poll Shows Nelson Not Representing Nebraska

Fahleson:  "By Retirement or Defeat Nelson Will Not Serve

 Another Term"

 Heineman:  61%

  Nelson:  30%

A New Rasmussen Reports article came out today showing Senator Ben Nelson is in severe political danger.  Nelson's health care vote put him in bad standing with the state of Nebraska.

Excerpt from Rasmussen Reports article:  "If Governor Dave Heineman challenges Nelson for the Senate job, a new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows the Republican would get 61% of the vote while Nelson would get just 30%."

"This survey puts in hard numbers what we have known all along.  Washington Ben is not representing Nebraskans," Nebraska Republican Party Chairman Mark Fahleson stated.

Fahleson continued, "By retirement or defeat Nelson will not serve another term."

NEBRASKANS OPPOSE DEMS' HEALTH CARE EXPERIMENT

63 Percent Of Nebraskans Oppose Current Health Care Reform.  (U.S. Chamber Of Commerce, "U.S. Chamber Releases Seven State Polls Showing Voters Opposed to Current Health Care Proposal, Press Release, 11/18/09)

Nebraska Hospital Association Government-Run Health Care Based On Expansion Of Medicare. "Nebraska's community hospitals are concerned about establishing a new public plan that could exacerbate the underpayment of providers by paying rates at Medicare and Medicaid levels. As such, we are opposed to a public plan and any option that links payment to Medicare rates." (Nebraska Hospital Association, "NHA Statement On President's Address On Health Care," Press Release, 9/10/09)

Director Of Nebraska NFIB Says Dems' Experiment Saddle Small Businesses With "Higher Taxes And Burdensome Mandates." "Our health care system is broken, but for Nebraska's small, family businesses, health care reforms that saddle them with higher taxes and burdensome mandates would make things worse, not better ... reform legislation will hurt small business - and that, in turn, will hurt all of Nebraska." (Bob Hallstrom, Op-Ed, "Competition, Level Playing Field Key To Health Care Reform," Lincoln Journal Star, 10/19/09)

The Lincoln Journal Star's Editorial Board Blasts Sen. Harry Reid For Cutting Medicaid From Nebraska While Protecting Nevada From Same Cuts. "Nebraska's hospital s, which in rural areas already struggle to stay open under current Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements, would face further budget reductions, estimated at $145 million. It's galling that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was able to work out a deal in the finance committee's bill that would protect his home state of Nevada from Medicaid reductions for five years." (Editorial, "Grinding Away At Health Reform," The Lincoln Journal Star, 10/14/09)

SEN. NELSON, WILL YOU STAND STRONG AND OPPOSE GOVERNMENT-RUN HEALTH CARE?

Nelson Will Filibuster Reid's Bill If His Amendment Prohibiting Federal Funding Of Abortion Does Not Pass. "'I've said at the end of the day if it doesn't have Stupak language on abortion in it I won't vote to move it off the floor.'" (Carrie Budoff Brown, "Nelson Will Filibuster A Bill Without Stronger Anti-Abortion Language," Politico's "Live Pulse" Blog, 12/3/09)

  • Sen. Nelson: "I Said I Can't Support The Bill With The -- The Abortion Language That's There."(CBS's "Face The Nation," 12/13/09)

Nelson Says He'll Filibuster Bill If It Includes Long-Term Care Entitlement Scheme. NELSON: "I might not vote to get it off the floor because of other considerations as well. Even if that was perfected where I could support that particular provision, if the public option is wrong, if the CLASS Act is still in it, if there are a whole host of other items that are the same as they are right now, I wouldn't vote to get it off the floor." (ABC's "This Week," 11/22/09)

"Nelson ... Said It Would Be 'Very Difficult' For Him To Support Any Proposal That Creates A National Plan -- Even One That Allows States To Opt Out."(Greg Hitt & Janet Adamy, "Offer To Let States Opt Out Of Health Plan Gains Support," The Wall Street Journal, 10/23/09)

  • Nelson Opposes Reid's Opt-Out Public Option. "I certainly am not excited about a public option where states would opt out or a robust, as they call it, robust government-run insurance plan. I'll take a look at the one where states could opt in if they make the decision themselves." (CNN's "State Of The Union," 10/25/09)

  • Nelson Doesn't See How Dems Can "Structure A Public Option In Competition With The Private Sector And Be Fair."(Gail Russell Chaddock, "Baucus Bill Targets Senators Retreating From Public Option," Christian Science Monitor, 9/8/09)

  • Nelson Worried That Public Option Would Become "'Government-Run, Big Government Insurance' Company." "Although he has not ruled out supporting a public option, Nelson said he wants to make sure it would not become a 'government-run, big-government insurance' company." (Shailagh Murray & Lori Montgomery, "Centrists Unsure About Reid's Public Option," The Washington Post, 10/28/09)

Nelson Opposes Reid's Tax On Health Insurance To Pay For Government-Run Health Care. "'It's a real problem, isn't it?' said Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., a moderate who opposes the excise tax." (Susan Ferrechio, "Senate Health Plan Funding In Doubt," The Washington Examiner, 10/16/09)

  • And Nelson Doesn't Like Pelosi's Income Tax Increase Either. CNN's ED HENRY: "Do you support the surtax?" NELSON: "No, I don't." (CNN's "Newsroom," 7/17/09)

Nelson Worries About The Cost Of The Medicare Buy-In And Fears It Will Lead To "The Ultimate Single-Payer Plan." "We don't know what it's going to cost. The second thing is I'm concerned that it's - it's the forerunner of single-payer, the ultimate single-payer plan, maybe even more directly than the public option." (CBS's "Face The Nation," 12/13/09)

RNC RELEASES NEW WEB VIDEO “LISTEN” ON DEMOCRATS’ HEALTH CARE REFORM FAILURES

WASHINGTON The Republican National Committee announced a new web video today on President Obama’s and Congressional Democrats’ failure to listen to the American public’s health care reform concerns.  The web video, entitled “Listen,” can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MB0csqGkvzI.

“For months Americans all across the country have been letting President Obama and Congressional Democrats know that their government-run health care experiment is wrong for America. The American people don’t want Washington Democrats spending another trillion dollars that we don’t have on a liberal health care bill that will raise taxes, increase premiums, cut Medicare, and drive us further into debt.  But Democrats aren’t getting the message because they simply aren’t listening.  We have seldom seen a political party march in lock step in opposition to the will of the American people.  Democrats believe that they can do anything, say anything, and spend any amount.  They believe they can trample over the system of checks and balances that have protected this country from radical extremes for over 200 years. President Obama and Congressional Democrats need to slow down and start listening to the American people and work with Republicans to find common-sense solutions for health care.” – RNC Chairman Michael Steele

It's 11am, Where Do You Stand Now, Ben Nelson?

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.): "I think he has said different things at different times."

This morning Nebraska Republican Party Chairman Mark Fahleson conducted a news conference regarding the moving target that is Ben Nelson's position on government-run health care.

Fahleson stated there is a battle going on:  Washington Ben Nelson versus Nebraska Ben Nelson.  Although Nebraska Ben Nelson has said time and time again that he will not vote for a health care bill that provides for taxpayer-funded abortions, Washington Ben Nelson is now signaling that he remains open to voting for the legislation.

"It's not often we agree with liberal partisan Democrat Senator Barbara Boxer, but she's right when she says that Sen. Nelson has "said different things at different times,'" explained Fahleson.

Last week, Nelson said that unless his abortion amendment or language like it was added to the health bill, he would join a Republican filibuster against the measure. "That's non-negotiable," as Senator Nelson is quoted in Politico on December 3, 2009.

In the same story, even Ben Nelson's liberal colleague, Barbara Boxer from California can't keep up with his changing positions.  "I think he has said different things at different times," Boxer said of Nelson's filibuster threat.

Now, it seems something has changed.  Rather than being "non-negotiable," Senator Nelson now says, "We'll see what happens." (Reuters, December 9, 2009)

After his abortion amendment failed, Nelson said he will not rule out supporting the final Senate measure. "Let's see what develops. One thing I've found is that the future sometimes can surprise you," he said. (Washington Post, December 9, 2009)

Senator Nelson is quoted as saying, "My position has not changed.  I've drawn a line in the sand." (Lincoln Journal Star, December 9, 2009)  However his actions and votes show otherwise.

"Sen. Nelson should follow the principled leadership of his colleague Sen. Mike Johanns, who has said the time has come to scrap this liberal health care experiment and start over in crafting a real bipartisan solution to health care," Fahleson remarked.

Fahleson continued, "This government takeover of our health care system should have ended by now.  Ben Nelson has had multiple opportunities to do that.  How many times are we going to allow Ben Nelson to put one more second back on the clock and allow the liberal Democrats to force this Trojan horse of a single payer system down Americans' throats?"
