LINCOLN, NE -Chairman Mark Fahleson commended the "strong slate of candidates" assembled by the Nebraska Republican Party as the statewide filing deadline for the 2010 Primary Election expired Monday.

"Our investment in candidate recruitment has served us well," Fahleson said.  "We will be very competitive up and down the ballot and across the state in what should be a very good year for the Republican Party."

Fahleson said that having a strong and popular Governor at the top of the ticket would be an asset to other candidates around the state.

"Governor Heineman's popularity at the top of the ticket will be a real advantage as we work to increase our Republican majority in the legislature," Fahleson said.  "Our incumbent senators are strong, and the challengers we've recruited will make the NE GOP extremely competitive."

Fahleson added that the Party will work hard to reelect Congressmen Lee Terry, Adrian Smith, and Jeff Fortenberry, Secretary of State John Gale, and a new Republican State Treasurer.

Fahleson commented that Attorney General Jon Bruning and Auditor Mike Foley are running unopposed and will be part of the team to help elect Republicans across the state.

All candidates seeking office can be found here.

Chairman Mark Fahleson's Statement on Tom White's Announcement

Democrat State Senator Tom White formally announced his challenge to incumbent Congressman Lee Terry in the Second District Congressional race.

"The first vote Tom White would make would be to keep Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House," Fahleson said.

Fahelson noted that White had served on the National Democrat Platform Committee and has a reputation as the Legislature's most divisive and partisan state senator.

"People of the Second District want a check and balance on Nancy Pelosi's extreme agenda, and they have that in Congressman Lee Terry," Fahleson said.  "Tom White supported the failed stimulus bill and the $1 trillion government takeover of health care, and has already accepted a $4,000 contribution from Pelosi herself.  Clearly he is out of touch with voters in Nebraska."

Nebraska Republican Party Chairman Mark Fahleson released the following statement today on news of Chuck Sigerson's resignation from the Omaha City Council

"Chuck Sigerson has served Nebraska for decades, both as a political leader as well as a public official.  There has never been a time that Chuck didn't put Nebraskans and Omahans first.  While Chuck has decided that, despite his best efforts, he is unable to return to the Omaha City Council at this time, I'm confident he remains dedicated to bettering our state and is grateful to now have the opportunity to spend more time with his wife, children and grandchildren.  We are grateful for Chuck's service to his city, his state, and to the Republican Party."

McGrain Named State GOP Executive Director

Governor Dave Heineman says McGrain "has what it takes" to make Party successful

LINCOLN, NE - Chairman Mark Fahleson announced today that political consultant and fundraiser Jordan McGrain has been named Executive Director of the Nebraska Republican Party. McGrain replaces Perre Neilan, who resigned in January to accept a position in the private sector.

"I am excited to have Jordan as a part of the team," Fahleson said. "I believe his energy and experience will be an asset to our candidates across the state."

McGrain had served as an independent strategist and fundraising consultant to state and municipal candidates since 2006, working with successful legislative candidates Tim Gay, John Nelson, Charlie Janssen, Beau McCoy, Scott Price and Ken Schilz, and North Platte Mayor Marc Kaschke.

Prior to serving as a political strategist, McGrain worked as a development consultant for an Omaha company specializing in non-profit capital campaigns.

"Jordan McGrain is a proven strategist and fundraiser who has what it takes to make the Party sound, strong, and successful in 2010 and beyond," said Governor Dave Heineman.

In 2007, McGrain served as campaign manager for Attorney General Jon Bruning's U.S. Senate run. He has also run campaigns for former State Senator Mick Mines and former Omaha City Councilman and mayoral candidate Jim Vokal.

"2010 is an important year for the Republican Party," said Hal Daub, former Omaha Mayor and former Republican National Committeeman."  Jordan McGrain adds the leadership and competitive spirit we need to be successful."

Chairman's Report

I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season and had an opportunity to spend time with friends and loved ones and reflect on those things that are truly important.

It's now officially 2010--a critical year for the Republican Party and our nation.  Wouldn't it be great if we could kick off the 2010 election cycle by electing a Republican to Ted Kennedy's Senate seat?  According to the recent polls, it's within reach, Republican Massachusetts State Sen. Scott Brown is currently in a dead heat with his Democratic rival.  On the heels of major wins in Virginia and New Jersey last year, a special election victory in this race on January 19th would not only send shock waves across the Democratic Party, but it would also end their 60-vote, filibuster-proof majority in the United States Senate ahead of the final votes on the health care bill.  Simply put, Scott Brown could help undo what Washington Ben Nelson did to Nebraska and America.

We have asked our Republican friends in Massachusetts what we in Nebraska can do to help and they've told us we would be most effective by helping to make calls from our own phones right here in Nebraska.  It's a great way to give our volunteers a test run as we ramp up efforts on behalf of Governor Heineman, Attorney General Bruning, Secretary of State Gale, Auditor Foley, Congressman Terry and our other Republican candidates in Nebraska.  Visit Scott Brown's website to learn more about his candidacy, and then click here to join the phone-from-home program.  If you're interested in heading out to Massachusetts in person, contact our office at (402) 475-2122 and ask for anyone in the political department.  We'll get you connected with the Brown campaign to discuss lodging and logistics.

Give Ben the Boot

The sleazy deal Washington Ben Nelson cut on health care has embarrassed our great state--the phrase "Cornhusker Kickback" has now become part of popular culture thanks to him.

Enough is enough.  On the day before Washington Ben announced his vote we went up with a new website
www.GiveBentheBoot.comThe new website has gained national attention- not only are Nebraskans fed up with Nelson, but the rest of the nation is too.

To date, GiveBentheBoot.com has received over 40,000 hits and over 1,200 individual contributions.  Our Facebook page for Give Ben the Boot has over 2,000 friends (join us if you haven't already).  Money raised from this website will be used to help us unseat Washington Ben in 2012.

I encourage you to check out this website, forward the link to all of your friends, and help us Give Ben the Boot.

NEGOP Holiday Open House

On December 14 the NEGOP hosted a Holiday Open House to benefit the People's City Mission.  Guests were asked to bring a donation item for the Mission.  The Republican Party has long stood for personal compassion and assistance for those in need as opposed to reliance on the welfare state.  Because of everyone's help we were able to collect an abundance of items for the People's City Mission.  Thanks to all who participated.

Confections at the Castle

On December 18 Booster Club members enjoyed a special event- Confections at the Castle at Joslyn Castle in Omaha.  Governor Heineman spoke about the importance of ensuring Ben Nelson does not win

re-election.

The Booster Club is an exclusive club of individuals who contribute between $50 and $1,000 annually. The Booster Club has long been a key component of Republican Party financial stability in Nebraska, and helps to build the Republican Party through grassroots efforts that engage new people in the political process. For 2010, we already have 100 Boosters and we want to make this the largest Booster Club yet!  The NEGOP will also assist current Booster Club members in hosting Booster-Only events in their area to increase local membership.  For more information regarding the Booster Club, please contact Rebecca Weber, NEGOP Finance Director, at 402-475-2122 or rebecca@negop.org

Free Enterprise Caucus

The Nebraska Republican Party Free 'E'nterprise Caucus (Free E Caucus) is comprised of small businesses, corporations and PACs.  Membership will support the Nebraska Republican Party's mission to recruit, train, support and elect common-sense, conservative candidates who understand the important role that a strong local economy plays in stabilizing families. The effort will prop-up candidates who are committed to creating programs that entice businesses to locate and expand in Nebraska and who are committed to encouraging in-state entrepreneurship.  For 2010, there are three levels: $500 General Membership, $1,000 Advisory Board Member, $2,500 Executive Board Member.  Membership in the Free E Caucus includes invitations to roundtables, receptions and other events with our Republican Electeds and Party Leadership.  The Free E Caucus will provide an avenue for members to connect and communicate with our Republican Leaders as they work with legislation directly affecting small business.

Fact-Checking Ben Nelson

"The points he makes show he either needs to force Congress to change the legislation or rethink his support for final passage."

National Review Online: Critical Condition

Grace-Marie Turner
January 4, 2010

Sen. Ben Nelson is defending his vote to pass the Senate's health-care legislation in a new television ad in his home state of Nebraska, but the points he makes show he either needs to force Congress to change the legislation to match his claims or rethink his support for final passage.

In an attempt to quell a firestorm of opposition to his casting the crucial 60th vote for the Senate bill, Nelson says, "With all the distortions about health-care reform, I want you to hear directly from me."

He argues that the bill "lowers costs for families and small business, protects Medicare, finally guarantees coverage for preexisting conditions, and reduces the deficit. And it's not run by the government." Nelson adds, "I'm convinced this is right for Nebraska."

Who wouldn't vote for such a bill? If only Nelson's comments were accurate.

Nelson wisely doesn't mention the controversial "Cornhusker Kickback" that granted federal funding for his state's Medicaid expansion, or the abortion language that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops says does not guard against federal funding of abortion. But there are serious problems with the claims the senator does make.

Independent analysts show that health costs would continue to rise, access to care could be jeopardized for seniors, deficit reduction is an illusion created by budget gimmicks, and the preexisting-condition clause would come at the price of big-government control.

Let's take Nelson's first claim - that the bill "lowers costs for families and small business."

The independent, nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says insurance costs for families and small businesses would continue their rapid rise.

Families purchasing insurance in the individual health-insurance market would be hardest hit, with premiums $2,100 higher than if Congress did nothing. A family would pay $15,200 for health insurance by 2016 if the Senate bill were enacted, compared with only $13,100 if the bill were not enacted, the CBO says.

Premiums for a family receiving coverage though a small business would increase to $19,200, on average, by 2016 - about the same as without reform.

In addition, most companies would face an avalanche of new reporting requirements and potential penalties and fines. Health reform will add to, not lighten, the regulatory and financial burden on companies that had hoped to get relief from rising health costs.

The National Federation of Independent Business came out strongly against the Senate bill, saying it "is short on savings and long on costs, is the wrong reform, at the wrong time and will increase health-care costs and the cost of doing business."

Bill proponents argue that some people and businesses would see lower premiums because they would qualify for subsidies. But this is just another Washington budgetary game. Subsidies aren't free. Taxpayers always pay. And only about 20 million Americans would qualify for the premium subsidies, even though everyone would be required to carry government-approved health insurance.

Senator Nelson says that the bill "protects Medicare." Even though they are being told otherwise, seniors would pay a high price for reform. The Senate bill would reduce Medicare spending by $471 billion over the coming decade. Rather than reinvesting that money to improve and modernize the program, the money instead would be diverted to create a new entitlement program to subsidize health insurance for working Americans.

Cuts this deep would cause many providers to stop seeing Medicare patients, or perhaps even to close their doors. Medicare's chief actuary, Richard Foster, says that doctors, hospitals, and other providers "could find it difficult to remain profitable and, absent legislative intervention, might end their participation in the Medicare program (possibly jeopardizing access to care for beneficiaries)."

And the claim that bill lowers the deficit means that, in addition to cutting Medicare by half a trillion dollars, the Senate would also raise half a trillion in new taxes - during a recession.

Only a series of accounting gimmicks - such as implementing benefits beginning in 2014 but raising taxes starting in 2010, and double-counting Medicare savings - allowed Senate majority leader Harry Reid to get a CBO cost estimate that pretends to add "not one dime" to the deficit.

Medicare actuary Foster found that the Senate bill would bend the cost curve up, not down, and that the new taxes on drugs, devices, and health-insurance plans would increase prices and health-insurance costs for consumers.

Guaranteeing coverage for preexisting conditions unfortunately would mean federalizing health-insurance regulations, which challenges Senator Nelson's claim that health care would not be "run by government."

Senator Reid's bill contains more than 2,500 references to powers and responsibilities of the secretary of health and human services. It would centralize Washington's control over health spending and coverage. The federal government would regulate the health-insurance market (until now a purview of the states) and would require virtually all Americans to have the health insurance it specifies. Washington would also dictate how much of their income people had to pay for health insurance, and it would set up a system of federal fines and penalties for those who didn't comply.

Given all this, Senator Nelson may want to rethink his support for the legislation.

Nelson Gets Defensive in TV AD During NU Game

Fahleson:  Nebraskans would rather be watching Ndamukong Suh than Washington Ben

Senator Nelson will release a new television ad tonight during the Holiday Bowl.  Throughout the ad Nelson tries to appeal to Nebraskans by making empty statements such as: "With all the distortions about health care reform, I want you to hear directly from me."

"The ad's not believable.  Nebraskans know actions speak louder than words.  Nebraska Ben says one thing, then Washington Ben Nelson cuts sleazy backroom deals with Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi," Nebraska Republican Party Chairman Mark Fahleson remarked.

Nelson goes on in the ad to say he has "listened" to Nebraskans and is "convinced this is right for Nebraska."  Fahleson continued, "Really, Sen. Nelson?  Did you really listen to the thousands of calls, e-mails, visitors and  protesters from Nebraska saying they don't want this bill?  The same people you referred to as "almost laughable"?  That arrogance is what's laughable."

The timing of the ad is also questionable.  Senator Nelson has been under constant pressure from Nebraskans for his health care vote.  Nelson voted against the wishes of his constituents and is now trying to reach as many of them as possible by airing this during the Holiday Bowl.

"It's fitting he chose to run the ad during the Nebraska football game since Nebraskans have made it clear they want to sack Ben Nelson." Fahleson stated.

This ad was paid for by the Nebraska Democratic Party.  Given the current financial state of the Nebraska Democratic Party, it's obvious national money is funding this campaign to give Nelson cover.

Fahleson concluded, "Nebraskans would rather be watching Ndamukong Suh than Washington Ben."
